How to Make Browser Games Run Smoothly on Your Phone
Published
Browser games are meant to just work, and most of the time they do. When one stutters, ignores your taps or will not load, the cause is usually something simple on the phone itself. These fixes take a minute or two, need no technical knowledge, and are listed roughly in the order worth trying.
Start with the obvious: reload
If a game freezes, shows a blank area or will not respond, reload the page. It sounds too easy, but it clears more problems than everything else on this list put together. A game can fail to load properly because the connection dipped for a second, and a second attempt goes through cleanly.
Close what you are not using
Phones slow down when a lot is running at once. Twenty open browser tabs and a dozen apps in the background all take a share of memory. Close the tabs you do not need, and swipe away apps you have finished with. On an older phone this alone can turn a jerky game into a smooth one.
Check battery saver mode
Low power or battery saver modes work by holding the phone back. They reduce performance and limit background activity to make the charge last longer. That is sensible most of the time and bad for games, where it shows up as choppy movement.
If a game feels sluggish, look for the battery saver icon and switch the mode off while you play. Some phones turn it on automatically when the battery drops to around twenty per cent, so plugging in the charger can help too.
Use full screen
Most game pages have a full screen button, and it is worth using on a phone. It removes the address bar and the rest of the page, so the game gets the whole display. Targets are bigger and easier to hit, and you are much less likely to scroll the page by accident with a stray swipe.
For some games, turning the phone sideways helps as well. Games where things move across the screen, such as Duck Shoot or Paddle Rally, benefit from the extra width. Games with tall play areas, such as Tower Stack, are better upright. If the screen will not turn, check that rotation lock is off.
Keep your browser up to date
Browser updates include speed improvements and fixes, and games rely on the newest features more than ordinary pages do. Phones normally update apps by themselves, but it is worth opening your app store now and then to check whether the browser is waiting for one. If a game works on a friend's phone and not on yours, an old browser is a likely reason.
Give the connection a moment
Small games load in a blink, but on a weak signal even a small file can stall. If nothing appears, check whether other sites are loading. Moving closer to the router, or switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, often sorts it out. Once a simple game has loaded, it usually keeps running even if the signal drops, because everything it needs is already on your phone.
Look at your ad blocker and extensions
Content blockers sometimes stop parts of a game from loading, since they cannot always tell a game script from an advert. If a game shows an empty box, try switching the blocker off for that site and reloading.
Clean the screen
This one is not about software at all. Touchscreens read the tiny electrical changes from your fingertip, and grease, moisture or a worn screen protector get in the way. If swipes are being missed in Fruit Slice or taps are landing late, wipe the screen with a soft dry cloth. Dry your hands too. Wet fingers are the commonest cause of taps that do not register.
Silence interruptions
A notification sliding down from the top of the screen at the wrong moment can cover part of the game and steal a tap. Switching on Do Not Disturb for a few minutes prevents it.
Clear the browser's stored data, as a last resort
If one site keeps misbehaving while others are fine, the browser may be holding on to an old, broken copy of it. Clearing the stored data for that site in your browser's settings forces a fresh download. Be aware that this also removes anything the site saved on your phone, such as your preferences.
Make a shortcut
Not a fix, but a convenience. Your browser's menu has an option called something like "Add to Home screen". It puts an icon for the site alongside your apps, so a favourite game is one tap away.
Still not working?
If you have tried all of this and a game on this site still will not behave, let us know. Tell us the game, your phone and your browser, and what you see. It may well be a fault on our side.
